What is the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS)?
After Brexit, EU, EEA and Swiss citizens who want to live permanently in the UK must hold a valid immigration status. The EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) was introduced as part of the Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU. This allows EU citizens and their family members who were residing in the UK before 31st December 2020 to maintain their rights to live, work, and study in the UK, provided they obtain status under the EUSS.
Under this scheme, eligible individuals can also bring close family members to the UK if they meet the requirements.
For those who do not qualify for settled or pre-settled status, a visa under the new immigration rules is required.
The deadline to apply to the EUSS was:
- 30th June 2021 (for those who resided in the UK before 31st December 2020), or
- Within three months of arrival (for Joining Family Members).
The Home Office may consider late applications if there are valid and compelling reasons for the delay.
